The Value of Having a True North to an Organization CEO Insights 09-23-2025 By Jim Steinlage President & Chief Executive Officer I found out as a young teen in scouting that using a compass is a great way to find direction and not get lost. No matter how you turn it, the compass arrow it is always pointing True North. Years later in the business world I started hearing, does this organization have a True North? I wondered what a scouting term has to do with organizations, but then I researched to understand the correlation. “True North” is often described as the guiding purpose, principles, and values that keep your organization aligned, especially when things get tough. It’s like the compass that doesn’t change the arrow direction, no matter how you twist the compass. In organizations there is right and wrong no matter how you try to justify different results even during tough times. The Value of Having a True North to an Organization Clear Purpose Having a True North gives team members a reason beyond just making a profit. Clear purpose helps everyone in the organization understand why the organization exists, what it’s trying to achieve, and how their role contributes to its purpose or achievement. Customers appreciate and value the culture and trusted relationship that you create. True North is not just a statement on the wall that looks great, but the whole organization’s shared beliefs that drive decisions, culture, and performance Consistent Decision Making When faced with tough choices, True North acts as a simple way to make decisions. Leaders and team members should ask: Does this align with our core values? Consistence in decision-making is when leaders and teams make choices that align with their talk, principles, values, and purpose. Not every decision will always be the same, but an organization’s values should be predictable Team Members Alignment & Engagement As a leader, walk your talk so team members see clear vision, predictability and direction. Team members will feel motivated when they sense connection to something meaningful. True North reduces confusion, builds trust, and gives team members a shared direction. It helps ensure team members’ goals, behaviors, and priorities are consistent with the organization’s WIG’s (Wildly Important Goals) and values. Resilience in Times of Change Markets, technologies, and competitors change but True North provides stability. It prevents chasing trends that don’t fit your organization’s WIG’s and values.
