How AI Will Impact Your Company Culture CEO Insights 12-5-2024 By Jim Steinlage President & Chief Executive Officer For someone who has been around the IT industry for some time I quickly realize that the integration of AI is going to be a major technological shift, and it can’t be ignored. In the past as the organization grew you focused on building personal relationships and trust as ways to transform and enhance the organization’s culture. Although AI has been around for years influencing our buying habits now changes brought on by generative AI are poised to affect everything from communication styles to employee engagement and the decision-making process. Organizations’ employees are at different phases of AI literacy today as most all are at least experimenting with its use cases. Organizational leaders will need to understand, adapt to, and have a strategy for these changing times. One challenge will be balancing the organization’s future success through AI implementation while not diminishing years of established organizational culture. One thing we know is you cannot stop an idea whose time has come. So, let’s explore some ways AI can bring value to your organization culture with my limited exposure. Enhancing Collaboration, Communication and New Processes One of the most significant future impacts of AI on company culture is the enhancement of collaboration, communication, and new processes. AI tools will streamline communication channels, making it easier for teams to connect regardless of their geographical location. I see future enhancements in Slack and Teams leveraging the benefits of AI. One example might be AI analyzing communication information and patterns and making suggestions for the best ways and times for meetings and how things were handled from previous communication. The result will lead to improved overall efficiency and an increase in employee satisfaction. You will also see reengineering and new ways of working processes. Properly deployed AI digital tools will enhance collaboration as well as increase productivity. Using AI communication tools can assist in fostering a culture of openness and collaboration. Empowering your team members to share ideas more freely is great, but as business owners there should be a level of nervousness around privacy and legal ramifications with such easy access to information if not properly restricted. Shifting Employee Engagement Strategies AI brings a lot of value to repetitive tasks. AI allows your workforce to focus on higher-value work that requires human creativity and critical thinking. It can reduce troubleshooting time with its access to historical information. AI can enhance productivity and efficiency on a massive scale with real time data. This shift can significantly enhance employee engagement getting rid of dull roles or boring non challenging tasks. Employees who feel their jobs are meaningful are more likely to be engaged, be much more productive and have a positive influence on company culture. Automating mundane tasks enables your team to dedicate their time to work that inspires them, bringing them more fulfillment and productivity. AI can help you personalize employee experiences. Human Resource will begin leaning on solutions that are built with AI-driven platforms to recruit, analyze employee performance, provide tailored learning and development opportunities. This can help boost morale and foster a culture of continuous learning within your organization. Data-Driven Decision-Making AI provides access to powerful analytics that can inform your decision-making processes by using comparison and historical information quickly. This can give you great insights into employee performance, satisfaction, warning signs and areas needing improvement. Incorporating data analytics into your culture can encourage a mindset of openness and accountability. Most organizations may have access to this type of information but not in a form to easily data mine and retrieve it. AI is much quicker and more user friendly as you create your wish list of desired results. You can build stronger trust, confidence and integrity in your culture when your employees see that decisions are based on real-time factual data rather than gut feelings that may feel are sometimes bias. Preparing for Change Management The introduction of AI into your organization will demand discipline in change management strategies to meet organizations compliance and confidentiality requirements. As leaders, you will need to strategize, discuss, plan and prepare your team for these changes. It will require some very thorough safeguards put on limitations of your organization’s data sharing. It is important to communicate about AI’s great benefit as well the risk and potentially liabilities if not deployed properly. Engage your employees in discussions about AI’s impact on their roles and provide training sessions as you transition AI into your organization. AI solutions should not be viewed as a threat but rather as an opportunity for growth. As a progressive organization you need to foster a culture of adaptability where employees feel comfortable experimenting with new technologies and embracing change. This mindset will be crucial as AI continues to evolve. Emphasizing the Human Element While AI can automate tasks and analyze data, it is important to remember that the human element is irreplaceable in your company culture. Maintaining strong relationships among your team members is vital for a thriving company culture. Encourage your employees to think outside the box and share how AI can be integrated into their daily workflows while also preserving the human touch that defines the workplace. Personally, as an AI advocate, I see tremendous value AI can and will bring. I can also see ways it can reshape your company culture, either good or bad. It will be crucial to prioritize a balance between technology and human connection in the future. Never lose sight of human interfacing. In ways, it is like the challenge we faced when remote working became mainstream. Nothing will replace the human voice, big smiles, personal notes, or other unique individual touches of communication styles. Staying focused on a balance approach will ensure your organization remains innovative while fostering a supportive environment and culture. Looking Ahead As I indicate in the first paragraph you cannot stop an idea whose time has come. AI is clearly a catalyst for productivity, creativity, transformation and a shift in cultural transformation within your organization. It definitely comes with pros and cons. One of the biggest challenges for legacy organizations is transforming to a culture that emphasizes data driven decisions and gets team members excited about AI’s potential for organization growth and future success. Will you as organization leader make it a positive change for your organization? As your organization navigates the transition, remember to emphasize the human personal touch element and foster a culture of openness, flexibility, and keeping all team members engaged. Doing so will position your organization for continued success in a rapidly changing business landscape.
